ESSENTIALS: From studio to exhibition

ESSENTIALS is an ongoing seminar series for artists, photographers, and collectors in Singapore's art market.

The first instalment of ESSENTIALS: From studio to market is a practical guide for photographers and artists who are ready to move their prints out of the studio and into the arts industry and market.

This 3–hour long seminar will be held by Hu Qiren, Singaporean visual artist and educator, and Gwen Lee, Founder and Director of DECK and Singapore International Photography Festival.

About Hu Qiren
Hu Qiren is a lecturer in photography and an artist whose practice explores the myriad forms of image making, incorporating a wide range of media, including photography, video, installation and performance.

Qiren has showcased his work at the Queens Museum, Aperture Foundation’s first Summer Open and Photoville in New York, Louvre Museum in Paris, Singapore International Photography Festival, Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, Auckland Festival of Photography in New Zealand and at the Theory of Clouds Gallery & Community Worldwide in Kobe, Japan. More recently, Qiren was the grand winner of the inaugural Harper's BAZAAR Art Prize. Currently, he is residing and working between New York and Singapore.

For more than 5 years, Qiren has worked at Sugimoto Studio as Production Manager overseeing studio management, production, exhibition planning, design, research and collection of artworks.

About Gwen Lee
Gwen Lee is the Founder and Director of DECK and Singapore International Photography Festival. She has years of experience in the field of arts and culture having spent many years working in museums and galleries. Prior to DECK, she ran a commercial gallery 2902 Gallery dedicated to photography and lens-based media.

Gwen has curated various photography showcases in Asia, and has been invited as a jury member in Europe & Asia. In 2010, she was nominated and awarded with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Culture award for her contribution to the Singapore arts scene. In the past 5 years, she has been participating actively as a portfolio reviewer in UK, China, Korea, Japan and Singapore, and has participated in curatorial study trips in Germany and Denmark.

Most recently, she has completed a photobook project "Steidl Asia Book Award with 8 Asian photographers.
